Future Hyundai and Polestar automobiles will feature Nvidia cloud-based gaming.

Soon, Hyundai and Polestar SUV and car owners will be able to play sophisticated games while their electric vehicles charge.

Although playing video games in a car is nothing new, Nvidia's GeForce Now cloud-based gaming service has not yet been implemented. After Nvidia announced at CES that three automakers have now agreed to stream GeForce Now games in "select vehicle models," that is about to change.

The tech company now has a list of supposedly dreamy PC gaming setups that include vehicles from Hyundai/Kia/Genesis, BYD, and Polestar.

From online stores like Steam and Epic Games Store, GeForce users can play over 1,000 paid and free games, such as Fortnite and Destiny 2. Nvidia and GeForce Now Alliance partners around the world sell GeForce Now in North America and Europe.

During a press conference, Nvidia's vice president of automotive Danny Shapiro stated, "We've done a lot of optimization to enable it to run on all different devices, whether it's a laptop, phone, tablet, smart TV, and now cars." To achieve what we refer to as the shortest time from click to photon, tuning is required.

Shapiro said that the time between when a player presses a button and sends a signal up to the cloud and back down to cause a reaction on the screen is referred to as "click to photon." He stated that a strong Wi-Fi connection should be sufficient for the service to function properly in an electric vehicle that is sitting somewhere while it charges. However, cars are well-known for not always remaining in one location.

"You need a reliable 4G or 5G connection on the road," he stated. Therefore, it really depends on how strong your network is. In order to make the integration of GeForce Now into the infotainment system in automobiles as seamless as possible, we are intensifying our tuning and optimization efforts with our automotive partners.

Since Nvidia has partnerships with a lot of automakers, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the three OEMs that will first bring GeForce Now to their vehicles already have Nvidia parts in some of them. BYD is developing new electric vehicles on the Nvidia Drive platform, while Hyundai Motor Group and Polestar use Nvidia Drive technology in their vehicles.

At CES, Nvidia also announced a new strategic partnership with Foxconn, a supplier and manufacturer of automobiles. Foxconn will produce new electronic control units based on the most recent Nvidia Drive Orin technology, according to the two companies' claims that they would construct automated platforms for electric vehicles.
